Science Labs

The PTA is funding two labs this year with San Diego Youth Science. These have been very popular in past years with both students and teachers. In the fall, every student will have the opportunity to participate in a lab focused on biodiversity.

Description

Typically found around 1,000 feet below the surface, oarfish are the longest bony fish, reaching lengths of over 36 feet! Did you know two of these unique fish washed ashore locally in 2024? These rare occurrences led SDYS to connect and visit the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Marine Vertebrate Collection Manager to learn more. The Vertebrate Collection now includes
both oarfish, along with more than two million other preserved specimens. In this exciting lab session, student scientists investigate the richness of life and the role of trait inheritance in ecosystems. Working in research teams, they observe the characteristics of live and preserved specimens, classify their findings, and make predictions based on morphology. Students even prepare their own slides for microscope study, gaining hands-on experience in how scientists explore, document, and share discoveries about the diversity of life.

Molecular Biology

In addition, our 4th and 5th grade students delve into the source of these inherited adaptations—DNA. Working in research teams, they use chemical reactions to extract genetic material from fruit, with each student taking home their DNA sample in a microtube. To inspire further curiosity, we've provided step-by-step instructions for families who wish to try the experiment at home.
